Mumbai. Farmers in major producing states have very little stock of maize left while its demand remains strong. As a result, maize prices are expected to rise by 100-150 rupees per quintal before the harvesting of the new crop and its arrival in the markets begins.

The price of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka is currently stable at Rs 2350/2450 per quintal while an average of 500 bags (each bag of 60 kg) of maize is arriving there every day.

According to trade analysts, the demand for maize is expected to increase from next week because the stock is continuously decreasing rapidly with the farmers as well as traders and middlemen.

The Central Government has increased the minimum support price of maize by Rs 175 from Rs 2225 per quintal for the 2024-25 season to Rs 2400 per quintal for the 2025-26 season, while the wholesale market price is running around this.

Due to the attractive and profitable price of their produce, the interest and activity of the farmers in maize cultivation has increased significantly.

As a result, the production area of maize at the national level jumped to a peak of 93.34 lakh hectares till August 22 in the current Kharif season, which is 9.76 lakh hectares more than the sowing area of 83.58 lakh hectares in the same period last year.

This time the five-year average area of maize has been estimated at 78.95 lakh hectares, while the actual area has gone far beyond that.

The harvesting and preparation of the new crop of early sown maize is likely to start from the end of next month or early October. There is a huge demand for maize in the ethanol industry.

There is limited arrival of maize in the major markets of Bihar, due to which prices are stable at a high level. With the increase in maize acreage,

the total production is expected to be better, but there are reports of damage to the crop due to heavy rains and floods in some areas.
