Makhana (fox nuts) prices are currently soft due to weak demand and high stock levels, especially in major producing areas like Bihar and parts of West Bengal.

As the wedding season and festivals have paused until mid-January, the demand for Makhana remains subdued, contributing to price softness. However, the situation is expected to change in the coming months.

Small traders, who stocked up on Makhana during the last season when prices were high, are now facing pressure as demand weakens.

Prices of average quality Makhana are reported to be around Rs 1050-1150 per kg, while high-quality Makhana is priced at Rs 1500-1550 per kg, and low-quality Makhana is priced at Rs 850-900 per kg in the Delhi market.

With limited stock remaining in producing markets and the arrival of new Makhana not expected until 6-7 months from now, prices are expected to fluctuate based on demand.

The possibility of price increases is likely next year, especially as traders work through existing stocks.

Therefore, while the market is expected to stay soft until January, there could be upward pressure on prices in the months following, when the demand for Makhana traditionally picks up again.
