Saskatoon. The estimated figures of domestic pea sowing area for the current year released by Canada's government agency Stats Can have surprised the industry and trade sector.
These figures also make it clear that farmers are not deterred by the heavy 100 percent customs duty imposed by China on the import of Canadian peas.
Earlier, there was uncertainty in India as well regarding the imposition of import duty on peas, but later it was clarified that duty-free import will continue. Meanwhile, Canada's trade tension with the United States remains unresolved.
There were concerns that the pea production area would decline compared to last year, but the Stats Can figures show that the sowing area has increased from 31.23 lakh acres last year to 35.04 lakh acres this year.
This is almost equal to the estimate of 35.17 lakh acres based on producers’ intentions expressed during an earlier survey.
The latest data is based on a survey conducted with about 25,000 farmers across the country between May 15 and June 12, followed by analysis of the collected data.
The Stats Can report noted that during the sowing period, dry and warm weather prevailed across most parts of Western Canada, which supported the expansion of the pea acreage.
The report further states that this year, the pea production area in the top three producing provinces of the Prairie division — Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba — was above both the five-year and 10-year average levels.
Sowing was completed in most areas by the end of May. While the weather was favourable at the time of sowing, rainfall is now urgently needed in many regions.
