Ministry of Agriculture Confident of Excellent Wheat Production

New Delhi. The Union Ministry of Agriculture is confident that, much like last year, the country will witness excellent wheat production during the current year as well. According to the Ministry, while unseasonal rains and storms have caused minor damage to crops in certain pockets, this is unlikely to have a significant impact on the overall yield.
This time, advanced and improved varieties of wheat—which not only boast higher yields but also possess greater resilience against adverse weather conditions—have been cultivated across a larger area.
Notably, last week, a leading industry body—the Roller Flour Millers Federation of India—projected the total domestic wheat production for the current Rabi season (2025-26) at 1106.50 lakh tonnes.
This figure is approximately 10 lakh tonnes higher than the estimated production of 1096.30 lakh tonnes for the 2024-25 season. The Federation stated that the wheat crop suffered considerable damage due to natural calamities occurring in March and April.
It is pertinent to note that the Union Ministry of Agriculture has estimated domestic wheat production at 1179.40 lakh tonnes for the 2024-25 season and 1202.10 lakh tonnes for the 2025-26 season. The Federation's wheat production figures are significantly lower than the government's estimates and are generally regarded as being more accurate and reliable.
The Union Food Secretary has emphasized the need to bridge the substantial gap existing between these two sets of figures. This is deemed essential to obtain accurate information regarding the supply and availability of wheat within the domestic sector,
to avoid difficulties in setting targets for government procurement, and to facilitate informed policy decisions concerning exports and other objectives. He believes that the actual wheat production will likely fall within the range of 1100 to 1200 lakh tonnes.
