New Delhi. The densest cloud formations of the southwest monsoon are currently observed over parts of Goa, particularly in Kuncolim and Chillalim, and along the coastal areas of Karnataka.
Heavy rainfall is also reported in Kolhapur, Pune, and Nashik districts of Maharashtra. Satellite images indicate that the dense monsoon clouds have now reached South Gujarat and Western Madhya Pradesh, passing over Mumbai, suggesting that heavy rain may occur in these regions soon. The densest cloud coverage remains concentrated along the western coast, with a wider spread than earlier.
A phase of heavy rainfall continues in Maharashtra, affecting many areas including Mumbai, Ratnagiri, Chiplun, Palus, Kolhapur, and adjoining western Maharashtra. Rain is also occurring in Nashik, Khopoli, Pune, Shrirampur, Ahmednagar, Baramati, and Satara.
Dense cloud coverage is present from the Karnataka coast to the northern coast of Kerala. Heavy rains have been reported from Bahamavara, Mangalore, Kasaragod, Payyannur, and Thalassery, while light to moderate rainfall has occurred in Chikmagalur, Hassan, Channapatna, and Mysore. Rain has also been recorded across Kerala and the hilly regions of Tamil Nadu.
This is expected to benefit spice and plantation crops, particularly small cardamom. Rainfall has been noted in Udagamandalam, Pollachi, Coimbatore, Valparai, and Tenkasi.
Rainfall was eagerly awaited in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh due to the needs of zaid crops and the approaching sowing period of Kharif crops. Madhya Pradesh is the leading producer of soybean, while Gujarat leads in groundnut production.
Gujarat is also ahead in cotton and castor production, and Madhya Pradesh in urad. Maharashtra remains among the top producers of cotton, soybean, and tur. Karnataka is the largest producer of pigeon pea and also leads in sunflower and ragi cultivation.
Farmers across these states have already begun preparations for Kharif sowing, and the timely arrival of monsoon rains is expected to support these efforts. This year, the monsoon arrived seven to eight days earlier than usual, so it is likely to reach other states either on time or ahead of schedule.
