New Delhi. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) states that the southwest monsoon arrived in the country on June 4, 2026, and completely withdrew by October 15, 2026. During this period, the country received 76.86 cm of rainfall, which is 15 percent less than the long-term average of 90.63 cm. The season for the northeast monsoon has now commenced.
Between June 4 and October 15, 2026, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced a 1 percent surplus in rainfall, while all other states in the southern peninsula recorded rainfall below the long-term average. This deficit ranged from 23 to 46 percent. It is worth noting that the northeast monsoon is the primary source of rainfall for South India.
During the period under review, Goa recorded the highest rainfall at 196.68 cm, while Punjab recorded the lowest at 28 cm. A significant rainfall deficit was observed in Maharashtra. Some states, however, recorded normal or above-normal rainfall.
