Monsoon withdrawal: Begins three days early from Rajasthan on September 14
★ The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the southwest monsoon began withdrawing from western Rajasthan on September 14, three days earlier than the scheduled date of September 17.
★ According to IMD, parts of Punjab and Gujarat are also likely to see monsoon withdrawal in the next 2–3 days. The monsoon season officially lasts till September 30, so further spells of rain are still expected. Fresh showers are likely in Himachal Pradesh, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between September 15 and 20.
Rainfall status
★ Between June 1 and September 13, the country received 840.3 millimetres of rainfall, about 7% above the normal 784.3 mm.
Region-wise distribution was as follows:
★ East and Northeast India: 20% deficit rainfall
★ Northwest India: 32% surplus rainfall
★ Central India: 11% surplus rainfall
★ Southern Peninsular India: 7% surplus rainfall
★ The good rains have encouraged robust kharif sowing. As of September 5, kharif crops had been sown across 110.54 million hectares, 2.5% higher than the same period last year.
★ Paddy sowing covered 43.82 million hectares, 4.7% higher year-on-year.
★ Maize sowing reached 9.46 million hectares, 12.2% higher than last year.
