More Than Twofold Increase in Edible Oil Imports from Nepal to India

Birgunj. Although the production of oilseeds and edible oils in India's northern neighbor—Nepal—is insufficient to even meet its domestic demand and requirements, the country nevertheless succeeds in exporting vast quantities of these products to India.
According to available data, India imported approximately 345,000 tonnes of edible oils from Nepal during the fiscal year 2024-25; this figure more than doubled in the fiscal year 2025-26, reaching 736,000 tonnes. Data regarding edible oil imports from Nepal during the first quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year is currently unavailable.
During the fiscal year 2025-26 (April–March), edible oil imports from Nepal totaled 83,467 tonnes in April 2025, 79,855 tonnes in May, 66,667 tonnes in June, 68,513 tonnes in July, 57,207 tonnes in August, 53,910 tonnes in September, 46,000 tonnes in October, 53,650 tonnes in November,
47,628 tonnes in December, 61,287 tonnes in January 2026, 55,052 tonnes in February, and 62,500 tonnes in March 2026. Edible oil imports from Nepal to India are exempt from customs duties and are primarily transported via border road routes.
