In February 2025, Myanmar exported a total of 81,000 tonnes of urad and 29,000 tonnes of tuvar, contributing significantly to the total exports of these pulses in the first two months of the year.
A total of 161,000 tonnes of urad and 34,856 tonnes of tuvar were shipped from Myanmar during January and February 2025.
The pace of exports is expected to remain high in the coming months, fueled by a strong supply of both urad and tuvar.
Myanmar had a notable export record in 2024, with 889,624 tonnes of urad and 313,365 tonnes of tuvar shipped throughout the year.
May 2024 saw the highest export volumes, with urad reaching 103,000 tonnes and tuvar peaking at 41,000 tonnes.
India is the primary destination for these pulses, benefiting from the duty-free import policy for tuvar until March 2026, while the duty-free import of urad is set to expire on March 31, 2025.
There are expectations that the deadline for duty-free urad imports might be extended to ensure smooth domestic supply.
Additionally, Myanmar's expected better production of urad and tuvar in the 2024-25 season is likely to increase exportable stocks, maintaining the supply to India.
With the reduced stock of tuvar in African countries and softened export prices from Myanmar, India is expected to continue importing these pulses in large quantities
