Myanmar’s Tur (Pigeon Pea) Production Estimated to Rise 10–15%

Rangoon: Tur (pigeon pea) production in India’s northeastern neighbouring country, Myanmar, is estimated to increase by 10–15% during the 2026–27 season compared with 2025–26, reaching around 350,000–400,000 tonnes. This year, not only has the area sown under tur increased significantly, but weather and rainfall conditions have also remained favourable for the crop.

According to leading trade analyst and Managing Director of RV International, Shyam Narsaria, Myanmar’s tur exports have declined somewhat during the current year. In the first eight months of 2026, from January to August, Myanmar exported only around 150,000 tonnes of tur, considerably below the average shipment of about 250,000 tonnes for this period. Exports have fallen by 25–30%, but Myanmar still has approximately 150,000 tonnes of tur stocks available for shipment.

According to the analysis, India’s tur-sown area is estimated to be almost the same as last year. However, a lack of adequate rainfall in major producing states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka could reduce crop yields, potentially increasing the need for tur imports.

Myanmar’s average annual tur production is around 300,000–350,000 tonnes, but this year it would not be surprising if production rises to 350,000–400,000 tonnes. Good rainfall in mid-September was followed by higher temperatures, and this combination of weather conditions is proving beneficial for the tur crop.

The area under tur cultivation in Myanmar is also expected to increase by 10–15% this year.
