Nepal: Import and Export Data of Edible Oils
★ During the period from August to July, Nepal exported 374,086 tonnes of soybean oil, while importing 539,549 tonnes of crude soybean oil.
★ Sunflower oil exports reached 457,760 tonnes, whereas imports of crude sunflower oil stood at 166,527 tonnes.
★ Nepal imported 32,318 tonnes of crude palm oil and exported 6,685 tonnes of refined palm oil.
★ The sharp rise in Nepalese soybean oil exports to India has raised concerns among Indian oil producers. They argue that this trade violates the South Asian Free Trade Area (SAFTA) agreement.
★ Under SAFTA and the India-Nepal Trade Treaty, exports from Nepal to India enjoy zero-duty access, which is causing losses to Indian industries.
★ Several industry bodies, including the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA) and the Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA), have urged the government to take immediate action on the issue. However, no steps have been taken so far.
