News Capsule: Basmati GI Row Over Madhya Pradesh Intensifies
★ The dispute over including Madhya Pradesh in the Geographical Indication (GI) area for Basmati rice has intensified, with the All India Rice Exporters Association (AIREA) formally opposing any expansion of the notified Basmati-growing region.
★ Traditional Basmati-producing states such as Punjab and Haryana argue that India cannot oppose Pakistan's efforts to expand its Basmati area internationally while allowing a similar expansion within the country.
★ Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh has continued to seek inclusion in the GI area, arguing that its farmers should receive the benefits of the Basmati tag. Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has also urged the Centre to revisit the issue.
★ The matter remains pending before the Madras High Court, and the existing GI boundaries are expected to remain unchanged until a final judicial decision is made.
