News Capsule: Excessive Rains Become a Challenge for Saskatchewan Farmers
★ Farmers in Canada's Saskatchewan province have nearly completed seeding and are now focusing on post-seeding activities such as herbicide applications and monitoring crops for pests and diseases. However, widespread rainfall during the past week has created waterlogged conditions in several areas, disrupting normal field operations.
★ According to Saskatchewan Agriculture, seeding across the province is now 99% complete. While the rainfall was beneficial for many dry regions, excessive precipitation left fields saturated in some areas. Strong winds accompanying the rains also delayed herbicide spraying in several districts.
★ The recent rainfall significantly improved soil moisture conditions across the province. Topsoil moisture is currently rated as 15% surplus, 74% adequate, 10% short, and 1% very short. Despite the overall improvement in moisture, excessive rainfall and saturated fields in some regions could hamper crop development and delay essential farm activities.
