News Capsule: Black Pepper- Sluggish Trade in North
★ Pepper trade remains sluggish after Diwali in North Indian consuming centres, though normal activity is expected to resume next week.
★ Meanwhile, prices in the Kochi terminal market are rising by about ₹1 per kg daily, with ungarbled pepper quoted at ₹693 and garbled at ₹713 per kg. Masala manufacturers continue to build stocks to meet production needs, supporting the market.
★ However, traders are concerned about Brazilian pepper being sold in upcountry (northern) markets at around ₹750 per kg, which could affect domestic competitiveness.
★ According to the Agriculture Ministry, India’s pepper production estimate for the 2026 season has been revised down from 1.1 lakh tonnes to 85,000 tonnes. Adverse weather, including heavy rains and strong winds in several regions, is expected to impact the upcoming crop.
