News Capsule: Canada Weekly Review: Pressure persists on lentils and peas
★ In Canada, the market for lentils, peas and other pulse crops may remain challenging not only in January but throughout the 2025/26 marketing year.
★ Prices stayed largely stable during the holiday period, but a sense of “general malaise” continues to weigh on the market.
★ China’s tariffs on Canadian peas and Turkey’s duties on lentil imports have reduced Canada’s market share, even though overall imports by these countries are higher than last year.
★ Supplies of green lentils remain ample, raising the likelihood of a higher carryout in 2025/26. This has reduced interest in new contracts and price fixation. As a result, pea and lentil acreage is expected to decline this spring.
★ On the price front, most lentil prices were unchanged as of January 6, while yellow pea prices edged up slightly and green pea prices remained steady.
