News Capsule: Gujarat: Pulses production sees strong growth
★ Pulses production in Gujarat has recorded a sharp rise over the past six years. According to the agriculture ministry, annual output increased from 10.58 lakh tonnes in 2019–20 to 21.52 lakh tonnes in 2024–25. During the same period, the area under pulses expanded from 9 lakh hectares to 14.39 lakh hectares, while productivity improved from 1,173 kg per hectare to 1,495 kg per hectare.
★ Chickpea accounts for over 70% of the state’s total pulses output, with production rising from 6.36 lakh tonnes to 15.63 lakh tonnes. Pigeon pea (tur/arhar) production also increased by about 45%. Other pulses such as urad, moong and moth bean have also seen notable expansion across the state.
