News Capsule: Rajasthan: Delay in Government Procurement Leaves Moong–Groundnut Farmers Distressed
★ The delay in the government’s procurement of moong and groundnut has intensified worries among farmers across Rajasthan. The MSP purchase, which usually begins on November 1 every year, has not started yet. Although registrations opened in October, the government has not announced any procurement date, forcing farmers to sell their produce at lower market prices.
★ Due to excess rainfall, the quality of the crop has been affected to some extent, but farmers say that procurement should start immediately for produce that still meets the quality standards.
★ The government has fixed the MSP for moong at ₹8,768 per quintal and for groundnut at ₹7,263 per quintal. While the state government had announced that 20–25% of the produce would be procured at MSP and began farmer registrations on October 18, no clear schedule for procurement has been released yet.

Market Prices 2,500–3,000 Rupees Below MSP
★ The large gap between MSP and market prices is causing significant losses to farmers. Moong, with an MSP of ₹8,768, is selling at rates 2,500–3,000 rupees lower in mandis. Groundnut prices are also well below the MSP.
★ Daily arrivals of moong range from 1,000 to 10,000 quintals in local markets, yet procurement has not begun. Farmers cannot hold their produce any longer and are being forced to sell at distress prices.
★ Officials say procurement may begin next week, but no official date has been communicated yet. Farmers, who have been demanding an October-start for procurement, feel the government limited its action to registrations without taking concrete steps to begin actual buying.
