I Grain India's predictions for the future
New Delhi. Nigella prices are currently trading at a high level. Given the current situation, sentiment remains bullish. Due to weak supply and rising demand, nigella prices have already increased by ₹15-20 per kg during the current month. It is noteworthy that, at the time of the arrival of the new crop, iGrain India advised its readers that nigella prices would remain high throughout 2025. Subsequently, readers were advised from time to time that nigella prices could reach ₹230/250 this year. Currently, nigella prices are being quoted at ₹225/235 per kg in the producing markets. While prices in the Delhi market have crossed the ₹250 mark, reaching ₹255/260. Sources believe that there are still about six months left for the new crop to arrive, so it is possible that the price of nigella seeds will reach 2014 levels before the new crop arrives. During 2014, the price of nigella seeds reached ₹290/₹300.
Production and Consumption
Nigella seeds are primarily produced in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. While Gujarat saw higher nigella production during the current season, lower production in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan resulted in total production being approximately equal to last year. Sources believe that national nigella seed production during the current season was estimated to be around 250/275000 quintals. The production in 2024 is also expected to be approximately the same, while production in 2023 was 350/40000 quintals. Although production remained similar to last year, the outstanding stock remained low. Sources say that last year, when the new crop arrived, the outstanding stock was 1.25/1.50 lakh quintals, which is estimated to be 30/40 thousand bags in the current season. Including production and outstanding stock, the total availability of nigella seeds is 3/3.25 lakh quintals, while annual consumption is estimated to be 3.50/4 lakh quintals. Therefore, prices are unlikely to decline in the coming days.
Incoming
Due to approximately 70/80 percent of the total production arriving in the markets, the current arrival of nigella seeds in the markets has been significantly reduced. In Gondal market, Gujarat, nigella seeds have been auctioned three times a week, and weekly arrivals have remained at 250/300 bags. Meanwhile, in Neemuch market, arrivals are 400/500 bags. Currently, the price of Nigella seeds in Neemuch Mandi is being quoted at Rs 205/235 per kg, depending on the quality, while in Gondal Mandi, the price was quoted at Rs 205/225. It is noteworthy that at the beginning of the current season, the price of Nigella seeds in Gondal Mandi was Rs 160/185 and the arrival was 2500 bags. Whereas in Neemuch Mandi of Madhya Pradesh, during the month of April, the price was Rs 165/188 and the arrival was 1000/1200 bags.
