Now there is no possibility of much slowdown in Magaj-Talbooj

The current situation in the Magaj-Talbooj (watermelon seeds) market reflects a combination of factors influencing both supply and demand dynamics.
Current Price Trend: Prices of Magaj-Talbooj have been steadily decreasing due to the ongoing arrivals of the domestic crop, particularly from Rajasthan, which is a major producer. As a result, prices have fallen significantly compared to last year. For instance, in November 2023, the price of Magaj-Talbooj in Jodhpur was around ₹810 per kg and ₹840 in Delhi. Currently, prices have dropped to ₹435 in Jodhpur and ₹440 in Delhi. Sources indicate that prices may still decrease by ₹20-25 per kg in the coming days due to continued arrivals and weak demand.
Domestic Production: The production of Magaj-Talbooj in Rajasthan has been impacted by excessive rainfall post-sowing, which has affected both the crop yield and quality. Despite this, the production is expected to remain around 2 lakh bags (each bag weighing 70-75 kg), similar to last year's levels. However, with the end of the peak arrival period expected around December 15, the supply pressure will reduce, potentially leading to an increase in prices thereafter.
Imports and Impact on Prices: The government had opened imports of Magaj-Talbooj under the Open General License (OGL) system in April 2024, significantly boosting the supply. Around 80-85 thousand tonnes are estimated to be imported this year, compared to the typical 30-40 thousand tonnes under the quota system in previous years. This increase in imports has contributed to the current price decline. However, it is reported that the stock of imported Sudanese Magaj-Talbooj (about 25-30 thousand tonnes) is mainly held by strong market participants and will likely be released gradually. Once this stock is absorbed, a price recovery is expected.
Future Price Expectations: After the arrival of domestic crops slows down by mid-December, and with reduced imports, prices are expected to improve in the coming months. Prices in January 2024 are anticipated to remain strong, as the pressure from both local supply and imports decreases.
In summary, while the Magaj-Talbooj market is currently experiencing a price drop due to abundant arrivals and weak demand, a price recovery is likely once the supply pressure eases after mid-December, with expectations for stronger prices in January.
