Opening of 100% broken rice export is being considered

The Indian government is considering lifting the ban on the export of 100% broken white rice, which has been in place since September 2022.
This potential move is under serious consideration as the domestic supply situation has stabilized and rice prices remain steady.
The government has already relaxed controls on other types of rice exports, including non-basmati rice, by removing the minimum export price (MAP) and the 20% export duty on non-basmati sella rice.
The 100% broken rice was moved to the restricted list in September 2022, prohibiting its export. However, with overall conditions improving, including sufficient domestic availability, the government is likely to approve the resumption of its export soon.
Industry experts argue that the export of this rice is crucial to meet the needs of importing countries, as it is widely used for animal feed and in food products.
India produces around 150 lakh tonnes of broken rice annually, and lifting the export ban could significantly boost its rice export volume.
Additionally, the Solvent Extractors Association of India has been pressing for the removal of the ban on rice bran exports, which could further expand India's rice export opportunities. The government is expected to announce a decision soon, given the favorable conditions.
