New Delhi. During the current Kharif season, Indian farmers are giving special priority to paddy cultivation, due to which there has been a tremendous increase in the production area of this most important food grain.
Data from the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that during the current Kharif season, till September 5, 2025, the domestic production area of paddy jumped to 438.28 lakh hectares,
which is 19.62 lakh hectares more than the area of 418.66 lakh hectares during the same period last year. This time the normal average area of paddy has been estimated to be around 403 lakh hectares.
Paddy is probably the only agricultural product which is cultivated in all the states of the country. Compared to last year, this time there has been a good increase in the area of paddy in most of the major producing states, which include Punjab,
Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Bihar as well as states like Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
According to the available data, compared to last year, the paddy production area during the current Kharif season has improved from 2.98 lakh hectares to 3.44 lakh hectares in Rajasthan, from 8.85 lakh hectares to 9 lakh hectares in Gujarat, from 14.85 lakh hectares to 15.12 lakh hectares in Maharashtra,
from 11.36 lakh hectares to 12.97 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh, from 55.67 lakh acres to 62.28 lakh acres in Telangana. Its area was recorded at 36.20 lakh hectares in Madhya Pradesh, about 32 lakh hectares in Punjab and 71.05 lakh hectares in Uttar Pradesh.
Although the paddy crop has been partially damaged due to surplus rain and severe floods in some states including Punjab, but considering the huge increase in area, its total production is expected to be better than last year.
There is huge stock of rice in government warehouses so even if production does not increase, there will be no threat to national food security.
