Pakistan – 10–12% of rice crop affected by floods in Punjab
★ According to the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP), only 10 to 12 percent of Punjab’s rice crop has been affected by floods. The association has rejected claims of large-scale damage.
★ While some areas have suffered crop losses, in regions that previously faced water shortages, the excess water could prove beneficial for rice cultivation and may increase per-acre yields.
★ Around 600,000 to 700,000 acres of farmland have been affected by floods.
★ In India too, floods in Punjab have impacted crops, which could lead to a decline in basmati rice production.
★ Both countries are major producers and exporters of basmati rice. A fall in production may drive up international prices of basmati rice, which could also impact domestic markets.
