Pakistan’s Rice Exports Hit by Multiple Challenges
★ In April 2025, Pakistan's rice exports dropped to below 44,000 tonnes—the lowest figure of the current fiscal year. Rising tensions with India and military action by India from May 7 to 11 against terrorist camps led to disruption at major ports like Karachi, Qasim, and South Asia Terminal, resulting in a significant container backlog.
★ The temporary closure of the Iran border further affected Basmati rice exports, adding to the logistics challenges. These developments have had a visible impact on global markets.
★ India is now offering Basmati rice at \$1,050–\$1,100 per tonne, while Pakistan is quoting around \$1,075 per tonne. With India expecting a record rice production this year and holding large reserves, its export potential has increased significantly.
★ As demand for Indian Basmati rice is expected to rise in the global market, it could potentially lead to price increases in the domestic market.
