Possibility of Basmati Rice Prices Rising
★ This year, instead of falling, basmati rice prices are likely to rise as recent floods in Punjab and Haryana have caused heavy crop damage. Prices may start firming up from early October.
★ Due to rains, the arrival of the new crop is expected to be delayed by about 15 days, starting around mid-October. Estimates suggest that nearly 30% of Punjab’s crop has been affected, though crops in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh remain safe.
★ Punjab accounts for 40% of India’s basmati rice exports. In FY25, the country exported 6.07 million tonnes, and exports in FY26 are also expected to remain at the same level.
★ Crop damage in Pakistan too may push international prices higher, which could impact the Indian market.
