Pressure on Chickpea Prices Before the New Crop Arrives
★ There is significant export happening from Australia.
★ In the current season, chickpea sowing has increased in the country. The weather is favorable for the crop, and good production is expected, but will farmers get the right price?
★ A large quantity of chickpeas is being imported from abroad. Around 1 to 1.1 million tons have already been shipped from Australia, and these are gradually reaching Indian ports.
★ According to manifest data, 607,000 tons of domestic chickpeas have already arrived at various Indian ports.
★ This year, Australia's chickpea production has crossed 2 million tons, with 1.1 million tons already exported.
★ With increasing imports and the upcoming harvest, there could be pressure on prices. It remains to be seen what decision the government will make regarding pea imports.
★ The government should impose an import duty on chickpeas after March 31, 2025, to ensure farmers get a fair price for their crop.
★ This would also reduce the country's reliance on pulse imports.
