Prices of All Rabi Crops Except Wheat and Maize Below MSP
★ The arrival of the new chickpea (chana) crop in mandis has pushed prices below the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Factors like a good harvest, imports, and stock of peas have contributed to the price decline. According to I-Grain India, prices may see a slight further decline, but a prolonged slump is unlikely. After the supply pressure eases, prices may rise.
★ In several mandis of Rajasthan, mustard prices remain below the MSP of Rs. 5,950 per quintal, raising concerns. This has renewed demands for increasing import duties on edible oils.
★ In September last year, the central government raised the effective import duty on crude palm, soybean, and sunflower oil from 12.5% to 32.5%, while refined oil duties were increased from 13.75% to 35.75%. However, despite these hikes, mustard and soybean prices have seen a decline.
★ NAFED has started selling soybean along with mustard.
★ Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that the government will make necessary changes to import and export policies to protect farmers and domestic industries.
★ Lentil (masoor) prices are also below MSP, with the new crop in good condition. After the U.S. imposed import duties, India may also consider imposing similar tariffs.
★ Prices of maize and wheat remain above MSP and are likely to continue this trend.
