New Delhi. The harvesting and preparation of Kharif crops and their arrival in the markets have already begun. The supply and prevailing prices in various agricultural produce markets indicate that the production of at least four crops - soybean, groundnut, guar and niger seed has improved compared to last year,
while on the other hand, there may be a decrease in the production of pigeon pea, black gram, green gram, sunflower and sesame.
Apart from this, the production of rice, maize, millet and ragi is expected to be almost equal to last year. The production situation has been estimated on the basis of fluctuations in the prices of these Kharif crops last month.
The Central Government usually releases the estimate of production of Kharif crops in September, but this time it is getting delayed. In the Kharif marketing season of the year 2023-24, the Union Agriculture Ministry had estimated the production of 1132.60 lakh tonnes of rice, 222.50 lakh tonnes of maize, 96.60 lakh tonnes of millet,
15.10 lakh tonnes of sorghum, 16.70 lakh tonnes of ragi, 34.20 lakh tonnes of tuvar (arhar), 16 lakh tonnes of urad, 11.50 lakh tonnes of moong, 86.60 lakh tonnes of groundnut, 130.60 lakh tonnes of soybean, 60 thousand tonnes of sunflower, 4 lakh tonnes of sesame and 30 thousand tonnes of nigerseed.
In the season of 2023-24, 325.20 lakh bales of cotton were produced, whereas in the season of 2024-25, there has been a huge decline in its sowing area and its production is likely to decrease.
Despite this, its wholesale market price remained soft in October. The average market price of medium staple cotton was 7154 rupees per quintal in the beginning of October, which fell to 6993 rupees per quintal in the beginning of November.
The sowing area of cotton has come down from 127 lakh hectares last year to around 115 lakh hectares this time.
The Union Agriculture Ministry had said on September 20 that the first advance production estimate of Kharif crops will be released in October.
For this, intensive discussions were also held with various associations, organizations and institutions, but still the production estimate has not been announced till now.
