Production area of Kharif crops increased by 11.5 percent to 258.57 lakh hectares

New Delhi. Data recorded in the latest weekly report of the Union Agriculture Ministry shows that during the current year, till June 27, the total production area of Kharif crops at the national level has increased to 258.57 lakh hectares, which is 11.5 percent more than the sowing area of 231.84 lakh hectares during the same period last year.

Till the week of June 20, the area under groundnut and soybean was lagging behind last year, but during the week of June 27, due to vigorous sowing in top producing states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the area has now surpassed last year.

According to official data, compared to last year, during the current Kharif season, paddy production area jumped 47.3 percent from 23.78 lakh hectares to 35.02 lakh hectares, sowing area of pulses jumped 34 percent from 14.40 lakh hectares to 19.28 lakh hectares and area of oilseeds increased 18.8 percent from 39.92 lakh hectares to 47.83 lakh hectares.

In the pulses category, the production area of urad increased from 1.42 lakh hectares to 2.35 lakh hectares and the sowing area of moong jumped from 4.30 lakh hectares to 8.58 lakh hectares, but the area of pigeon pea (tuvar) fell 3.7 percent from 8.67 lakh hectares to 8.35 lakh hectares.

The area of coarse cereals increased 23.6 percent from 33.28 lakh hectares last year to 41.14 lakh hectares this time. Under this, the area under maize has improved by 11 percent from 21.35 lakh hectares to 23.69 lakh hectares.

Similarly, the area under jowar has increased by 76 percent from 1.53 lakh hectares to 2.70 lakh hectares and the area under bajra has increased by 42 percent from 10.40 lakh hectares to 14.76 lakh hectares.

Until last week, the low area under oilseeds was a matter of concern but now the situation has improved. The area under soybean has improved from 31.78 lakh hectares to 32.04 lakh hectares and the area under groundnut has jumped from 8.14 lakh hectares to 15.79 lakh hectares.

But the area under cotton has fallen by 9 percent from 59.97 lakh hectares last year to 54.66 lakh hectares this time.
