The production area for most Rabi crops, excluding oilseeds, is ahead of last year's levels, despite a delayed start to the season. Due to the late harvesting of Kharif crops and high temperatures, the sowing of Rabi crops lagged behind schedule in October and continued to do so into the first week of November. However, since then, sowing has accelerated, leading to a rise in the total area sown.
As per the Union Agriculture Ministry's latest weekly data, the total area sown for Rabi crops has reached 428.80 lakh hectares, an increase of about 17 lakh hectares compared to last year’s 412 lakh hectares at the same time. This year's normal average area for Rabi crops is estimated at 635.60 lakh hectares, and it is expected that the total area will approach this figure.
Key developments include:
- Wheat sowing has increased from 188 lakh hectares to 200.40 lakh hectares.
- The area for pulses has risen from 105 lakh hectares to 109 lakh hectares.
- The paddy area improved from 9.16 lakh hectares to 9.75 lakh hectares.
- Coarse cereals, including millet and maize, have seen a rise from 24.70 lakh hectares to 29.25 lakh hectares.
However, oilseed crops have experienced a decline, with the area falling from 84.90 lakh hectares to 80.55 lakh hectares. Specifically, mustard-rapeseed sowing dropped from 80.10 lakh hectares to 75.86 lakh hectares, falling behind the normal average of 79.16 lakh hectares. Despite this, farmers have shown strong interest in sowing pulse crops such as gram, lentils, and peas, contributing to their increased area. Similarly, maize and sorghum have been sown more extensively than last year, with maize area expected to see significant growth.
Although the sowing of wheat has been successful in 200 lakh hectares, the ideal sowing window in key states like Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh has already passed, which may affect the final wheat area.
