New Delhi. Although as compared to last year, the total production area of pulses crops at the national level increased by 12.82 lakh hectares from 49.50 lakh hectares to 62.52 lakh hectares till July 15 in the current Kharif season, but it is important to note here that in the year 2023,

the monsoon was very weak due to the severe outbreak of El Nino weather cycle and the country received about 6 percent less rainfall than the long-term average.

Due to this, sowing of pulse crops started late and its pace also remained slow. Earlier, there was normal monsoon rain in the year 2022 and 2021 and the total area of pulses was recorded as 72.66 lakh hectares and 66.69 lakh hectares respectively till July 15.

The Meteorological Department has claimed normal monsoon rainfall till mid-July in the year 2024 as well, therefore, it should be compared with 2022 and 2021 instead of 2023 so that the correct picture of the difference in sowing area can be clear.

If we first look at the status of crop area in 2024 as compared to 2022, it is revealed that the total production area of pulses crops has decreased by 10.34 lakh hectares from 72.66 lakh hectares to 62.32 lakh hectares.

Under this, in the Kharif season of 2024, the production area of Arhar (Tuvar) increased from 25.81 lakh hectares to 28.14 lakh hectares as compared to 2022,

but the sowing area of Urad decreased from 18.06 lakh hectares to 13.90 lakh hectares and the area of Moong slipped from 20.19 lakh hectares to 15.79 lakh hectares.

Similarly, comparing the Kharif season of 2021 to 2024 shows that the production area of pulses crops has reduced by 4.37 lakh hectares from 66.69 lakh to 62.32 lakh hectares.

Under this, the production area of Arhar (Tuvar) slipped from 31.58 lakh hectares to 28.14 lakh hectares,

the sowing area of Urad fell from 15.67 lakh hectares to 13.90 lakh hectares and the area of moong slipped from 15.85 lakh hectares to 15.79 lakh hectares. Sowing of pulse crops is going on in many areas of the country.
