Vancouver. In its new report, StatsCan, an agency subordinate to the Central Government, has estimated the total production of Kabuli (including Desi) gram in Canada to increase rapidly to a height of 3.30 lakh tonnes during the 2024-25 season,
which is almost double the production of the 2023-24 season and the highest level since the year 2018-19. Even if the final estimated production figure remains slightly smaller,
there will still be a good increase in the supply and availability of Kabuli gram in Canada. The production and stock of Kabuli gram has been low there in recent years.
Canada will need to increase the export of Kabuli gram during the current marketing season of 2024-25, otherwise its surplus stock will increase significantly, which can put heavy pressure on prices. But Canada is going to face many challenges in the way of export promotion.
America is the biggest buyer of Canadian chickpeas. But this year there are indications of a great production of chickpeas in America itself, which may not only lead to a huge decline in imports but may also make it a major competitor of Canada in the global export market.
The production of chickpeas in America is estimated to increase by about 60 percent compared to last year and reach around 3.60 lakh tonnes this time.
As a result, Canadian exporters will have to focus on other markets where American exporters can also reach.
Production in Russia has decreased a bit but still the level is quite high. There is news of a 10 percent increase in sowing area in Argentina. The price of small grain chickpeas is expected to be relatively much lower this time.
