New Delhi. Production of the most important pulse crop of Kharif season - Arhar (Tuvar) is likely to be less this time because on one hand there has been a slight decrease in its sowing area and on the other hand there is a possibility of damage to the crop due to floods and rains in some areas.

However, Tuvar is a long-term crop whose maturity period is six to eight months, so if the weather conditions remain favorable in the coming time, then the total production can be slightly better through improvement in the yield rate.

According to the data of the Union Agriculture Ministry, the production area of Tuvar at the national level has decreased by 52 thousand hectares from 45.71 lakh hectares last year and has got stuck at 45.19 lakh hectares this time. Its sowing has increased in some states while the area has decreased in some other provinces.

According to the available data, compared to last year, the area under Tuvar crop during the current Kharif season improved from 12.18 lakh hectares to 12.20 lakh hectares in Maharashtra, increased from 2.27 lakh hectares to 2.91 lakh hectares in Gujarat, jumped from 3 thousand hectares to 15 thousand hectares in Rajasthan,

increased from 2.06 lakh hectares to 2.23 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh and improved from 1.92 lakh acres to 1.93 lakh acres in Telangana,

but in the most prominent producing state- Karnataka, the sowing area slipped from 15.42 lakh hectares to 13.01 lakh hectares. Apart from this, the production area of Tuvar crop increased from 3 lakh hectares to 3.36 lakh hectares in Madhya Pradesh and the area in Uttar Pradesh increased by 5 percent to 3.79 lakh hectares.

There is news of damage to Tuvar crop due to waterlogging and floods in the fields in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat. Some damage to the crop has also occurred in Madhya Pradesh.

In view of this, some analysts believe that the domestic production of tur may decline to around 30 lakh tonnes during the 2025-26 season. The government had estimated the production of 34 lakh tonnes of tur in 2024-25.
