Red Lentil Production Set to Rise in Major Producing Nations

Shanghai. The kind of data that is available suggests that India will become the world's leading producer of red lentils in the year 2025.
According to the estimates expressed in the Shanghai Pulses Congress, the production of red lentils in India increased from 17.90 lakh tons to 18.17 lakh tons during 2025 as compared to 2024, while in Australia it is expected to increase from 12.72 lakh tons to 15 lakh tons.
The arrival of the new crop there will start in October. Red lentils are produced well in India, Eastern and Canada and Australia. According to knowledgeable sources, the production of red lentils in Canada is likely to fall from 17.25 lakh tons last year to 17 lakh tons this time and in Turkey it is likely to fall from 3.10 lakh tons to 2.10 lakh tons.
The preparation for harvesting the new lentil crop has already begun in Canada. In this way, the total production of red lentils in India, Australia, Canada and Turkey combined is estimated to improve to 52.27 lakh tons during the year 2025, which is 1.30 lakh tons more than the production of 50.97 lakh tons in the year 2024.
Australia has the highest contribution in this, while there has been some increase in the production of red lentils in India as well. Earlier, during the year 2023, the total production of red lentils in these four countries was estimated to be 46.20 lakh tons.
As far as green lentils are concerned, its production is likely to increase from 4.25 lakh tons to 4.60 lakh tons in the US and improve from 1.93 lakh tons to 2.25 lakh tons in Russia during 2025 as compared to the year 2024,
while production in Turkey is expected to decrease from 75 thousand tons to 20 thousand tons. The total production of green lentils in the above three countries is estimated to improve by 12 thousand tons from 6.93 lakh tons last year to reach 7.05 lakh tons this year, whereas the production in the year 2023 was estimated to be only 4.39 lakh tons. Apart from this,
green lentils are produced in large quantities in Canada and in limited quantities in some other countries including India. The lentil cultivation season is different in different countries.
In India, its sowing starts in October-November during the Rabi season and the crop starts getting harvested in March-April. In Canada and America, it is sown during April-June.
