Request to Reinstate Standard Pack Size Rule for Edible Oils

Mumbai: The Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) has urged the Union Consumer Affairs Ministry to reintroduce the rule of standard pack sizes for edible oils.

In a letter to the Secretary, SEA highlighted that the abolition of the Second Schedule under the Packaged Commodities (Amendment) Rules, 2022, has led to widespread confusion among consumers due to irregular pack sizes like 800g, 810g, 850g, and 870g.

The association stated that such similar-looking but uneven pack sizes hamper price comparisons, create market distortion, and encourage unhealthy competition.

Since edible oils are sold under Maximum Retail Price (MRP), lack of standardization also affects price transparency.

SEA has emphasized that standard pack sizes are crucial to protect consumer interestsmaintain fair market practices, and ensure clarity in pricing.
