Retail sugar prices remain above ₹60 per kg

Mumbai: Compared to ex-factory and wholesale market rates, retail sugar prices have seen only a marginal decline and remain above ₹60 per kg. At the upper end, the price has been recorded as high as ₹77 per kg. According to available data, ex-factory sugar prices have fallen by more than 20 percent and wholesale prices by 10 percent since August 21.

Data released by the Price Monitoring Cell of the Department of Consumer Affairs indicates that retail sugar prices range from a high of ₹77 per kg to a low of ₹42 per kg, though the bulk of trading is taking place at the ₹65 per kg level. Due to high sugar prices, the cost of jaggery has also surged from ₹70 per kg in July to a new record high of ₹90–100 per kg.

On August 31—the first day of the current week—wholesale sugar prices dropped by ₹50 to ₹200 per quintal, settling at ₹5,300 per quintal in Mumbai and ₹6,000 per quintal in Chennai. On September 1, tender prices for sugar ranged between ₹4,400 and ₹4,900 per quintal for the S-30 grade and between ₹4,600 and ₹5,000 per quintal for the M-30 grade.

The Central Government has now become highly vigilant and is making every possible effort to boost sugar supply and availability while curbing the price surge. Retail sugar prices are also expected to soften soon.
