Retailers should also reduce the price of pulses: Consumer Ministry
The Consumer Ministry has urged retailers to lower the prices of pulses, reflecting the recent decrease in wholesale rates. During a meeting held last week, the ministry noted a 5-20% decline in wholesale prices over the past two months. However, retail prices have not witnessed a comparable drop. Key points include:
Wholesale vs. Retail Price Gap: Wholesale prices for pulses such as Tuvar dal, gram, yellow peas, lentils, and urad have declined by 5-20%, but retail prices remain largely unchanged.
Government's Recommendation: The government has recommended a 15-20% reduction in retail prices. Failure to comply could lead to increased open-market sales of pulses under the Bharat Brand initiative.
Supply Factors: A strong Kharif season coupled with significant imports of yellow peas has contributed to the price decline across all pulses.
Price Reductions by Variety:
Tuvar dal: 20% decrease
Gram and yellow peas: 10% decrease
Lentils and urad: 5-10% decrease
The ministry aims to ensure that consumers benefit from these reduced costs.
