Roasted Betel Nut Import Shifted to Restricted List

New Delhi: The Central Government has shifted roasted betel nut imports from the free category to the restricted list, following a request by Campco, a key plantation sector cooperative.

Previously listed under ITC (HS) code 20081920 with no import restrictions, roasted betel nut will now fall under HS code 08028090, which generally restricts imports.

Under the new regulation, roasted and other processed areca nuts can only be imported if the cost is Rs 351/kg or more, effectively setting a Minimum Import Price (MIP).

However, 100% export-oriented units, SEZ-based firms, and those operating under the advance authorization scheme are exempt from this MIP rule.

This move aims to control cheap imports and protect domestic growers. With the change in classification, all imports below the MIP threshold will be prohibited unless conditions are met.
