Sharp Decline in Tur Sowing: Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat See Major Drop
★ India has witnessed a significant decline in tur (pigeon pea) sowing this year. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and various state departments, as of 14–16 July 2025, total tur sowing stands at 25.42 lakh hectares, down from 27.18 lakh hectares during the same period last year—a drop of 1.76 lakh hectares.
★ Karnataka recorded the steepest fall, with sowing dropping by 2 lakh hectares—from 13.35 lakh hectares last year to 11.35 lakh hectares this year.
★ Gujarat also saw a decrease of 0.42 lakh hectares.
★ Maharashtra registered a marginal decline of 0.09 lakh hectares.
★ Andhra Pradesh saw a reduction of 0.19 lakh hectares.
★ Telangana, however, reported a positive trend with an increase of 0.29 lakh hectares.
★ The combined sowing in these five key states—Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, and Telangana—has declined from 29.42 lakh hectares last year to 27.01 lakh hectares this year, marking a total fall of 2.41 lakh hectares.
★ This decline is attributed to lower prices, erratic monsoon patterns, and a shift in farmers' cropping preferences.
★ In some regions, the sowing window is closing, and the data from the coming week will provide a clearer picture.
★ If sowing continues to remain low, production may be impacted, potentially lending support to market prices.
