New Delhi. Government procurement of wheat—the primary food grain of the Rabi season—has reached its final stage. According to official data, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and its associated state agencies have procured a total of 35,691,517 tonnes of wheat so far in the current Rabi marketing season.

This figure is 19.20 percent higher than the 29,936,003 tonnes procured during the corresponding period last season and exceeds the overall fixed target of 345.90 lakh tonnes by approximately 11 lakh tonnes.

Compared to the previous year, government procurement for the central pool during the current Rabi marketing season improved or increased across several states: Punjab rose from 11,923,689 tonnes to 12,163,233 tonnes;

Haryana increased from 7,082,919 tonnes to 8,120,596 tonnes; Madhya Pradesh surged from 7,774,491 tonnes to 10,436,803 tonnes; Rajasthan increased from 2,093,135 tonnes to 2,647,142 tonnes; and Uttar Pradesh jumped from 1,027,321 tonnes to 2,156,420 tonnes. Additionally, smaller quantities of wheat were procured for the central pool in Bihar, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.

It is noteworthy that the procurement targets set for the current Rabi marketing season were 122 lakh tonnes for Punjab, 72 lakh tonnes for Haryana, 100 lakh tonnes for Madhya Pradesh, 23.50 lakh tonnes for Rajasthan, and 25 lakh tonnes for Uttar Pradesh.

Procurement significantly exceeded the targets in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan, and came very close to the target in Punjab; however, it fell short of the target by approximately 3.50 lakh tonnes in Uttar Pradesh. The official season for government wheat procurement will end on June 30, 2026, although the actual procurement process has virtually ceased.
