Significant increase expected in desi chickpeas imports in India for FY 2024-25
★ According to estimates, India is expected to import 13,13,237 metric tons of desi chickpeas (chana) in FY 2024-25, which is 11.49 lakh metric tons more than the previous fiscal year.
★ As per data under HS Code 07132020, this projected import volume is nearly 8 times higher than FY 2023-24’s import figure of 1,63,992 metric tons.
★ January 2025 is expected to see the highest monthly import at 5,03,479 metric tons, which is more than three times the volume in December.
★ Imports for February and March 2025 are also expected to remain high at 2,69,246 and 1,80,118 metric tons, respectively.
★ Compared to previous years, the projected figures are significantly higher:
- FY 22-23: 59,255 metric tons
- FY 21-22: 1,40,486 metric tons
- FY 20-21: 1,40,991 metric tons
- FY 19-20: 1,17,839 metric tons
★ Year-on-year comparison:
- FY 24-25 vs FY 23-24: +11,49,245 metric tons
- FY 24-25 vs FY 22-23: +12,53,982 metric tons
