As of 17 December 2024, Sri Lanka has imported a total of 9,500 tons of rice, primarily from India, to address a domestic shortage and rising prices.
According to the Customs Department, the imports consist of around 3,300 tons of Kekulu rice and 6,300 tons of Nadu rice.
The Sri Lankan government, recognizing the shortage and price hikes in local rice varieties, authorized private traders to import rice until 20 December.
The government specifically targeted the import of Nadu rice, which is in higher demand locally. Despite a normal stock of local rice varieties, the import was essential due to the increase in domestic rice prices.
The Sri Lankan government has indicated that further imports are expected to continue in the next few days, and if the situation does not improve, the import deadline might be extended.
The easing of rice exports from India, including Basmati and non-Basmati rice, has contributed to increased shipments, further aiding Sri Lanka's rice supply. This strategic move aims to stabilize the market and curb the rising rice prices.
