Sugar Production - As of 15 April 2025: ISMA (Indian Sugar Mills Association)
★ So far in the 2024–25 season, 25.497 million tonnes of sugar have been produced; 38 mills are operational across the country.
★ Around 3.5 million tonnes of sugar are expected to be diverted for ethanol production this year (compared to 2.15 million tonnes last year).
★ In Uttar Pradesh, 22 mills are currently operating, 16 of which are in Western UP. Due to better yield and recovery, these mills are likely to remain operational until the end of April or the first week of May.
★ In Maharashtra, one mill in the Pune district is expected to continue operations until the second week of May.
★ Some mills in South Karnataka will restart operations between June-July and September 2025 during the special season.
★ Karnataka and Tamil Nadu typically produce 0.4–0.5 million tonnes of sugar during the special season.
2025–26 Sugar Season – Promising Outlook
★ Better Crop in Southern India: Good monsoon rainfall in 2024 has improved sugarcane cultivation in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
★ Improved Yield and Recovery in Northern India: In UP, new varieties are expected to enhance both yield and sugar recovery.
★ Positive Weather Forecast: Both IMD and Skymet have predicted a normal monsoon for 2025, which will favor crop production.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
★ A decline in sugar production this year, coupled with export permissions of 1 million tonnes, has led to increased diversion of sugar towards ethanol.
★ By the end of the season, the closing stock of sugar is expected to be below 4.5 million tonnes. Rising temperatures may also increase sugar demand.
★ Due to these factors, sugar prices are expected to improve in the future.
