Sugar production declines in Maharashtra
★ After a steep 26.6% drop compared to last year, production has reached 8.076 million tonnes (down from 11 million tonnes in the previous season).
★ Out of the 200 operational sugar mills in the state, 199 have shut down their crushing operations.
★ A total of 85.234 million tonnes of sugarcane was crushed this season, which is 20.6% less than the 107.39 million tonnes crushed last year.
★ The sugar recovery rate also fell to 0.947 quintals per tonne of cane, compared to approximately 1.025 quintals in 2023–24.
★ This decline is likely to impact stakeholders across the entire value chain — including farmers, mills, ethanol producers, and traders.
★ Due to reduced production, sugar supply may be affected in the coming months, potentially leading to a rise in prices.
