Sao Paulo. Brazil, the largest producer and exporter of sugar located in the continent of South America, was producing a great amount of sugar amid vigorous sowing of sugarcane, but it declined slightly during the second fortnight of last month.
According to the report of the top industry body - UNICA, during July 16 to 31, 2024, 36.10 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced in the Central Southern region of Brazil, which was 2.16 percent less than the production of the same period in the year 2023.
Due to the weather conditions not being completely favorable, the crushing of sugarcane decreased and its use for sugar production also decreased.
According to the report, compared to last year, the total crushing of sugarcane in the second half of July during the current year fell by 3.35 percent to 513.10 lakh tonnes. 50.28 percent of it was used for the production of sugar and 49.72 percent for the production of ethanol.
Due to dry and hot weather, the average recovery rate of sugar from sugarcane also decreased slightly. But the production of ethanol increased by 3.47 percent to 2.55 billion liters.
It is worth mentioning that the central southern part of Brazil is the most important sugar producing area in the world and Sao Paulo is the largest producer state there.
About 60 percent of the sugar is produced in this state. 90 percent of Brazil's sugar is produced in the central southern part while the remaining 10 percent is produced in the northern and northeastern parts.
According to the report of UNICA, compared to last year, this time the average yield of sugarcane in the second half of July fell by 10 percent from 87.50 tons per hectare to 78.75 tons per hectare.
The weather there remains dry due to which the crop is getting damaged.
