New Delhi. As per the Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA), out of the 534 sugar mills that began operations in the 2024-25 season, only 38 are currently active.
By April 15, 496 mills had closed for the season. Uttar Pradesh leads with 22 mills still crushing, followed by 16 in Tamil Nadu.
One mill each remains operational in Maharashtra and Gujarat, while all others have ceased operations.
So far, India has produced 254.97 lakh tonnes of sugar between October 1, 2024, and April 15, 2025. This includes 91.10 lakh tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, 80.76 from Maharashtra, and 40.40 from Karnataka.
ISMA estimates that sugarcane diverted for ethanol will rise to 35 lakh tonnes this season, compared to 21.50 lakh tonnes last year.
Most remaining mills are expected to shut by month-end, though some activity may continue in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka by June-July.
