Summer Crop Harvest Nears Completion
★ The area under pulses surged by 26% year-on-year to reach 1.104 million hectares.
★ Moong (green gram) sowing increased by 25% to 834,000 hectares, and urad (black gram) area rose by 32% to 250,000 hectares.
★ Every year, the summer season sees a significant rise in moong acreage.
★ Summer moong production is now approaching kharif season levels.
★ Oilseed area remained nearly unchanged at 375,000 hectares compared to last year.
★ Groundnut acreage rose by 4%, and sesame saw a 23% increase, reaching 397,000 hectares.
★ The total area under summer crops climbed to 6.022 million hectares, up from 5.24 million hectares last year.
★ According to the IMD (India Meteorological Department), from March 1 to April 8, rainfall across India was 32% below average.
★ Rainfall deficits by region:
– Northwest India: 50% below average
– Eastern & Northeastern states: 52% below
– Central India: 18% below
– Southern Peninsula: 93% below average
