Rajkot. As the sowing season approaches, major producers and stockists are trying to clear their stocks. Consequently, the average daily cumin arrivals at Gujarat's Unjha market have risen to 15,000-16,000 bags.
Cumin sowing is expected to begin next month in Gujarat, while in the flood-hit state of Rajasthan, the sowing process will only begin once the moisture content in the fields returns to normal.
The supply of cumin from farmers to the Unjha market has begun to increase, and stockists, anticipating a significant price increase, have begun to increase their sales.
Due to floods in many areas of northern India, domestic demand for cumin is lower than normal despite the festive season. Meanwhile, cumin from Turkey and Syria is arriving in the international market. India is eyeing China and Bangladesh.
Chinese buyers are planning to import cumin from India. It is understood that some Indian exporters have even sent quotations to Chinese importers. If the activity of Chinese importers increases, the cumin trade and market price may improve somewhat.
The price of cumin in Unjha Mandi yesterday was recorded between Rs 3920-4000 per 20 kg. It is believed that if the market price remains soft or stable, the enthusiasm and attraction of farmers towards cumin cultivation in the next season may decrease.
In the first quarter of the current financial year, cumin exports from India remained stuck at around 63 thousand tonnes, whereas in April-June last year, its quantity had reached 7 thousand tonnes.
