Dar e Salam. In the African country Tanzania, the production of pigeon pea (tuvar) is expected to increase to around 4 lakh tons during the current year and in this way it can become its second largest producer country after India.

Actually, last year the global market price of pigeon pea jumped to a record level of $ 1600 per ton, due to which the farmers of Tanzania got very attractive income and hence their enthusiasm in cultivating pigeon pea increased. Due to this the production increased there but the price came down to $ 600-750 per ton.

The reality is that India is the largest producer, consumer and importer of pigeon pea in the world and the global market price of pigeon pea depends to a large extent on Indian demand.

Last year, due to a shortage of pigeon pea in India, the price increased rapidly, seeing which the exporting countries also increased the offer price of their goods considerably.

But now the situation has changed. In India, the price of pigeon pea has fallen to around or below the minimum support price, so Indian importers have stopped buying it from abroad at higher prices.

In almost all the major exporting countries - Myanmar, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Sudan and Kenya, etc., the domestic consumption of pigeon pea is very low and it is mainly produced there for export purposes, so when the export demand weakens, the prices of pigeon pea also naturally fall.

In Tanzania, a plan has been made to build a warehouse facility for safe storage of pigeon pea so that the producers are not forced to sell their produce at throwaway prices due to falling market prices. On getting storage facilities, farmers can wait for the rise in market prices.
