Lucknow. It has been decided to start government procurement of Kharif paddy from farmers at Minimum Support Price (MSP) from October 1 in Uttar Pradesh.

The state government will try to make the registration process even simpler for farmers wishing to sell paddy. So far 5022 farmers in the state have registered themselves for the sale of paddy.

The Food and Civil Supplies Commissioner of Uttar Pradesh says that the draft of the paddy procurement policy for the Kharif marketing season of 2025-26 will soon be presented before the state cabinet so that it can be given final approval.

The government intends to start the procurement process from October 1 from the districts of western Uttar Pradesh, while paddy procurement will start in eastern Uttar Pradesh from November 1.

According to experts, the Food Department will propose a target of purchasing 60 lakh tonnes of paddy in the marketing season of 2025-26.

The Central Government has increased the minimum support price of paddy by Rs 69 per quintal for this season, due to which the MSP of general category paddy has increased from Rs 2300 to Rs 2369 per quintal and the support price of 'A' grade paddy has increased from Rs 2320 to Rs 2389 per quintal.

According to the available data, more than 57.70 lakh tonnes of paddy was procured by the government in Uttar Pradesh in the Kharif marketing season of 2024-25 and 4372 procurement centers were opened for this.

Better management of food facilities will be done. More than 9 lakh farmers were registered last year. During the current year, 4500 procurement centers are expected to be opened for the purchase of paddy in Uttar Pradesh with the cooperation of Food Corporation of India.

At present, 1820 rice mills are operating in the state which mill the paddy allotted by the government. The purchase of paddy is likely to start first in districts like Meerut, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Bareilly and Agra.
