Telangana holds its position as the third-largest cotton producer in India, following Gujarat and Maharashtra. Cotton production in the state decreased to 50.80 lakh bales during the 2023-24 season, down from 57.45 lakh bales in 2022-23.
However, it was still an improvement over the 48.78 lakh bales produced in 2021-22. A bale of cotton weighs around 170 kg.
Despite the decline, Telangana's cotton production is expected to remain significant in the 2024-25 season.
Nationally, Gujarat remains the leader in cotton production, with an increase to 90.57 lakh bales in 2023-24, up from 87.95 lakh bales in the previous year.
Maharashtra's cotton production declined slightly to 80.46 lakh bales in 2023-24 after peaking at 83.16 lakh bales in 2022-23.
The total cotton production in India during the 2023-24 season reached 325.22 lakh bales, but it's expected to drop to below 300 lakh bales in 2024-25.
Other cotton-producing states include Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha. Bt cotton is widely cultivated in all states except Odisha.
In terms of government procurement, during the 2023-24 season, Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) bought 32.84 lakh bales from farmers at the minimum support price.
For the 2024-25 season, over 86 lakh bales have already been procured, with the process still ongoing.
